An induction hot plate when the rental stove is failing

A single-burner induction plate can replace a dead coil without a single hole. It can also trip the kitchen breaker and confuse every aluminum pan you own.

1800 watts is most of a kitchen circuit

A typical US kitchen circuit is 15 or 20 amps at 120 volts. Eighteen hundred watts is 15 amps before you count the fridge motor kicking on. Run the plate alone. Unplug the toaster and do not start the microwave. If the breaker trips once, you do not have a ‘faulty unit.’ You have a shared circuit telling the truth.

The cord gets warm. That is a reason to plug straight into the wall. It is not a reason to hide the plate in a cabinet nook with no air.

Ventilation did not go away

Induction does not make a flame, but searing still makes smoke. If the range hood is the only fan and it only runs when the built-in burners are on, open a window. Smoke alarms in studios are enthusiastic.

The magnet test, said plainly

Stick a refrigerator magnet to the bottom of the pan. Firm stick means yes. A weak stick on a fancy clad pan can mean a thin magnetic layer that buzzes and heats unevenly. Fully aluminum, glass, and most copper will do nothing, and the plate will shut off.

Cast iron works and can scratch the glass top if you drop it. Lift pans; do not drag them. A scratched cooker is your problem, not the landlord’s, unless you also scratch their glass range beside it.

When a second cooker is a lease problem

Some leases, especially in micro-units and senior buildings, ban extra cooking appliances because of fire history, not aesthetics. A hot plate that lives on the stove grates can also block the building’s own burners and confuse an inspector. Park it beside the range, not on it.

If a burner is actually broken, the better move is a maintenance request. Use the plate while you wait, and say that in the ticket. Documenting a dead stove protects you more than quietly cooking around it for a year.

Single burner, about 1800 watts, with a real knob or large buttons

Undo 9/10

Enough to boil a liter of water and hold a simmer. Physical controls beat a glossy touch panel when your hands are wet. Look for a model that remembers it should not run with no pan — induction already does this, but a clear error light helps.

Skip it if: You need to sauté and boil at the same time. A second burner means a second circuit conversation.

Fits: One working pan that grabs a magnet, one free burner-sized square

Often roughly $50–$90. Check the live price.

Carbon-steel or cast-iron skillet you already trust

Undo 10/10

Induction heats the pan, not the glass. If a fridge magnet sticks firmly to the base, the pan will work. Copper and plain aluminum will not, no matter how expensive they were.

Skip it if: The magnet slides off. Do not buy a cooker hoping the pan will ‘sort of’ work.

Fits: Anyone who checked the magnet before checkout

Use what you own, or a basic carbon-steel skillet often under $40. Check the live price.

Questions people ask next

Will induction work during a simmer, or only on high?

A decent plate holds low power. Very cheap units pulse on and off at the bottom of the dial, which is annoying for sauces. Reviews that mention ‘pulsing’ are describing that, not snobbery.

Can I use it on the building’s glass cooktop?

Do not set it on the glass. The feet can scratch, and a hot base trapped against their glass is a warranty fight you will lose. Use the counter.

Is this safer than a coil hot plate?

The surface stays cooler than a coil, and it stops when the pan leaves. It is still a high-draw heater. Unattended oil is unattended oil.
