How the Undo score works

The score is a reversibility judgment. A 9 can still be a mediocre lamp. A 4 can be the right nail if your lease allows it. We never pretend the number came from a lab we do not have.

What we read

Manufacturer installation sheets and the pair diagrams printed on hardware. Typical lease clauses, as patterns, not as your contract. Failure modes renters repeat: paint lift, residue, drywall skin, heat curl behind a range, and spring rods that walk down a wall in August. When a package rating changes, the package wins and the guide should be corrected.

Five questions, two points each

  1. Does it pierce the wall? Friction and stretch-release score higher than nails. Tiny “damage-free” hooks that are actually wires still count as holes.
  2. Is removal a designed motion, or a hope? A tab you pull straight down beats gel tape you twist off.
  3. Does it tolerate ordinary rental paint, including a little texture, or only a perfect showroom wall?
  4. After we cut the printed weight in half for a long hang, does the hardware still cover the object?
  5. Can a tired person reverse it in one sitting without a razor, a heat gun, or a paint match?

9–10 leaves with you. 7–8 is reasonable on a tested smooth wall. 5–6 can scar paint if you rush. 4 and under means a hole, a solvent, or a surface you should not be decorating.

The rental derate

For adhesive that stays up more than a month, plan on half the published set rating. The other half is humidity, a warm kitchen, and the fact that the rating described every pair in the diagram, not the one pair that felt like enough. The strip planner does this arithmetic and refuses televisions.

What we will not do

We do not invent “we tested 47 models” awards. We do not sell a ranking. Amazon links are tagged so a purchase can pay a commission; the Undo score is written before that link and does not move because of it. We are not contractors, electricians, or lawyers. Electrical loads, fire egress, and your lease are yours to confirm.

Dates

Guides show a reviewed date. Planning figures for picture strips are conservative stand-ins because pair counts change. If you spot a stale number, the corrections page is the front door.
