Guides / Move in and out

The first 48 hours in a new rental

The expensive mistakes happen on day one, in a hardware-store mood, when every wall looks like a project.

If you use a shopping link, Amazon may pay us a commission. That does not raise your price, and it does not buy a better Undo score. We have not hands-on tested every product in a lab. Read the method. Disclosure

An hour of photos is the real security deposit

Before furniture, walk every wall, the inside of every cabinet, the tub caulk, the window tracks, and the floor under the windows. Photograph scratches with a coin in frame for scale. Email the set to yourself so it has a date the landlord does not control.

Note anything that already looks like a failed adhesive scar from the last tenant. You do not want that rectangle assigned to you fourteen months from now.

Buy the short list, then stop

Sleep: the lamp, and blackout only if the window actually faces a light you cannot live with. Read the curtain guide before you grab a spring rod and velvet. Clean: a plunger, a trash can, dish soap, a shower curtain if needed. Cook: one pan that passes the magnet test if you also need induction later. Fasteners: nothing until day three.

The things that can wait a week: organizers, wallpaper, extra hooks, a second air fryer because the first one was a mood. Live one ordinary weekday. The path you actually walk will tell you where storage belongs.

Keys, filters, bulbs

Bag original bulbs. Photograph the HVAC filter’s size so you replace like with like if the lease makes filters your job. Put a spare key with a human, not under the mat the lease forbids.

What we would actually shop

Links use our Amazon tag (upcottstudios-20). Price bands move. Confirm the package in your hand, especially pair counts and amp ratings.

Tension shower rod and a plain liner

Undo 8/10

If the unit’s rod is missing or grim, this is the first install. It has a high undo score and an immediate use. The bath guide covers cups and caddies.

Skip it if: The rod that’s there is fine. Do not replace working hardware for sport.

Fits: Move-in day, if the shower needs it

Often roughly $20–$40 with a liner. Check the live price.

One warm lamp and bulbs

Undo 10/10

Bare overheads make a new place feel like a holding cell, which leads to panic purchases. A single floor or table lamp you already measured into the car solves the first night.

Skip it if: You packed one. Unpack it before you shop.

Fits: The first night, every time

Often roughly $30–$80. Check the live price.

A small box of stretch-release strips, unopened until the test

Undo 8/10

Buy one box, not a hardware-aisle bouquet of gel tapes. It stays closed until the closet test in the strip guide passes.

Skip it if: You already know the walls are textured. Then do not buy strips at all.

Fits: Week one, after photos, not hour one

Often roughly $8–$15. Check the live price.

Questions people ask next

Should I patch the last tenant’s holes on day one?

No. Report them. Patching with the wrong sheen creates a new defect that is visibly yours.

Is used furniture worth it in a rental?

Yes, if it stands on its own and fits the elevator you just met. Wall-mounted used furniture is someone else’s stud problem. Inspect for bedbugs before it comes upstairs; that is a bigger deposit event than any hook.
