A renter lighting plan with no new wiring

Apartments go dim because the ceiling box was placed for a builder, not for a sofa. Fix the pools of light. Leave the wiring alone.

Light the work, not the ceiling

One overhead downlight makes faces look tired and leaves the corners dead, so people buy a second overhead. A lamp at eye height while you sit does more for the room. Put it on the side of your face you do not mind seeing, and bounce a little light off the plaster if the shade is open at the top.

Kitchens need the under-cabinet zone lit, and rentals rarely have that wired. A puck light with a rechargeable battery, or a short LED bar that plugs in at the end of the counter, solves prep. Do not stick a cheap adhesive bar to a wood cabinet you must return pristine; sit it on top of the tile backsplash ledge or use a freestanding counter light.

Do not outsmart the fixture

If a shade says 60 watts, an LED marketed as ‘100-watt equivalent’ can still be fine because the heat is lower — but only if the bulb itself is within what the socket and the enclosed shade allow. Enclosed glass globes cook cheap LEDs and they flicker for the rest of the lease. Buy the shape the globe can breathe around.

Swag hooks in the ceiling are holes. Adhesive hooks holding a lamp cord overhead are worse. Floor lamps and plug-in fixtures exist so you never have to do that.

The bulb bag

Put every original bulb in one bag, labeled by room, in the top of a closet. Move-out lighting inspections are mostly ‘this looks dimmer and colder than I remember,’ and the bag ends the argument.

Floor lamp with a shade you can see through, warm LED bulb

Undo 10/10

It makes a living room usable without a ceiling medallion or a swag hook. Look for a heavy base so it does not tip on the rug you just added. 2700K bulbs feel like evening; 5000K feels like a garage.

Skip it if: The only floor space is the path between the bed and the door. A swing-arm plug-in sconce may fit better.

Fits: A corner that is not a walkway

Often roughly $30–$80. Check the live price.

Plug-in sconce with a cord cover you can actually remove

Undo 7/10

Gives bedside light when there is no nightstand room. Prefer a sconce that hangs or clamps on a headboard you own. Adhesive cord covers leave residue; a fabric sleeve or a cord simply run behind furniture is cleaner.

Skip it if: The only mount is paint you have not closet-tested.

Fits: Bedsides and reading chairs

Often roughly $25–$60. Check the live price.

LED bulbs matched to the fixture’s rating

Undo 10/10

Replacing a harsh overhead bulb is free money, provided you stay under the wattage equivalent the fixture lists and you keep the original bulb. Smart bulbs are fine. Leaving them for the next tenant without being asked is how security deposits get creative.

Skip it if: The fixture is mysterious, buzzing, or warm to the touch with no bulb in it. That is a maintenance ticket.

Fits: Every existing lamp, after you bag the originals

A warm LED is often a few dollars. Check the live price.

Questions people ask next

Are smart bulbs worth it in a rental?

For schedules and a dimmer you do not have, yes. Keep the originals, and remove the smart bulbs when you leave unless the landlord asks you to leave them. Do not install a smart switch that replaces their wall plate.

Can I use a tension rod to hang string lights?

A very light strand, high enough that nobody walks into it, yes. Do not wrap a rod tightly with wire, and do not run lights as a fire-escape curtain. Check the strand is rated for indoor use and is not warm to the touch.
